History of UpLift Solutions

Mr. Jeffrey Brown and his team from Brown's Super Stores, Inc. have developed a unique connection with the Philadelphia inner-city community.  In their growing development of Brown's Family ShopRite, an 11-store supermarket business in the Philadelphia marketplace, and in partnering with lower-income communities, their team has gained critical insight into what is needed to overcome many of today's daunting social challenges (violence, high school dropout rates, drug abuse, the ex-offender population, civil rights, religious differences, blight, limited access to fresh, reasonably priced food, obesity/related illness, etc.)  Brown's growth and success, especially in lower-income, often diverse, communities, was significantly aided by its collaboration with several non-profit and government agencies.  These organizations include TRF (The Reinvestment Fund), The Food Trust and corresponding funding from the state of Pennsylvania through the FFFI (Fresh Food Financing Initiative), and the Federal Government through New Markets Tax Credits and other programs.

After initial store successes, TRF and The Food Trust brought visitors from all over the United States (officials from State governments, nonprofit organizations, and community groups alike) who wanted to learn about FFFI and Brown's strategies.  Despite visitors' strong request, Mr. Brown knew that it would not be feasible to expand to other national inner-city locations in the near future.  However, determined to answer the pleas to help make fresh food accessible to all, Mr. Brown found another way for his model to address the plights of similar low-income communities.

As a result, Uplift Solutions, Inc. was developed.  Using Mr. Brown's vision as a model to be adapted to each community's specific needs, UpLift Solutions can provide technical assistance to governments, nonprofit/community organizations, entrepreneurs, and supermarket operators interested in fresh, affordable food access nationwide.  In the end, UpLift Solutions intends to nationally minimize the health risks of poor nutrition and to address like social challenges that plague underprivileged communities.
