The 34,616 employees in the Philadelphia region who participated in our survey were asked to rate their company's chief executive officer in response to this prompt: "I have confidence in the leader of this organization." The leaders with the highest scores among large, medium, and small companies are our winners. Jeff Brown, president and CEO, Brown's Super Stores Inc. Top leader, large companies Brown's family-owned company, based in Westville, N.J., runs nine ShopRite grocery stores in Philadelphia, Bucks, and Montgomery Counties, and one in Brooklawn. The company has about 2,400 employees in the region. Now, where have you seen this face before? He joined Michelle Obama at this year's State of the Union address, an honor that recognized his efforts to bring full-fledged supermarkets with fresh foods to poor urban neighborhoods. Leadership motto: "It's the golden rule: Treat people like you want to be treated." What his employees said: "He is a true visionary who looks for 'out-of-the-box' opportunities and solutions for the challenges that we face."
